Maa Brahmacharini is the second manifestation of Maa Durga who is worshippied on the second day of Navratri. The form of Goddess Brahmacharini is extremely radiant and majestic. Maa signifies love and loyalty, wisdom and knowledge. She holds a rosary in her right hand and a Kamandal in her left hand. She wears Rudraksha.
Here word “Brahm” refers to “Tapa”. So Brahmcharini means Tapa Charini – The one who perform Tapa or penance. It is Said that the “Vedas”, “Tatva” & “Tapa” are synonyms of word “Brahm”.  This form of “Maa Durga” is known to be peaceful, soft and enchanting. Those who worship her also imbibe her qualities of peace and happiness.

When she was incarnated as the daughter of Himalaya, then influenced by the instructions of Devrishi Narada, she practiced very hard penances in order to obtain Lord Shiva as her divine consort. It is stated that during her penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband She spent 1000 years on the diet of flowers and fruits and another 100 years on the diet on leafy vegetables while sleeping on the floor.
Further she followed strict fasting regimen while staying at open place in scorching summers, harsh winters and stormy rains. According to Hindu mythologies she was on diet of Bilva leaves for 3000 years while She prayed to Lord Shankar.
Later she even stopped eating Bilva leaves and continued her penance without any food and water. She was known as Aparna when she left eating Bilva leaves. Her penance was so pure and had so much strength, power that it caused great disturbance in all the three worlds. After the hardship of penance for several thousand years, Lord Brahma through an oracle addressed her and said to her in a very pleasant manner-O Goddess, so far nobody has ever practiced such an austere penance. Only you could have done it. This wonderful deed is being praised in all the four quarters. Your desire would be fulfilled. She obtains Lord Shiva as her divine consort was fulfilled.
Goddess Brahmcharini blesses you with great emotional strength and you may be able to keep your mental balance and confidence even in the darkest hour. She inspires you to hold on to your ethics and march on the path of duty.
